May Brahman protect me. May Brahman protect the teacher. OM Peace, peace, peace be unto all. In our last class, we were studying the 11th Anuvaka of the Taittiriya Upanishad called Shishya Anushasanam, final instructions, the final talk before the students return to home and start on another journey, a second ashrama. How to live the life? A blueprint for the whole life. And it is worth for us to remember it. Vedam Anucia, having taught Vedas, Acharyo Ante Vashanam Anushasthi. This is the first mantra. There are four big mantras in this. Having taught the Vedas, the teacher thus instructs the pupil, of course, before his return to home, speak the truth, practice dharma, do not neglect the study of the Vedas. Having brought to the teacher a gift desired by him, enter the householder's life and see that the line of progeny is not cut off. Do not swerve from the truth. Do not swerve from dharma. Do not neglect personal welfare. Do not neglect prosperity. Do not neglect the study and teachings of the Vedas. These are the instructions. We have discussed about these two. But just to summarize what we discussed, what is the meaning of dharma? That is, you be your own self. One meaning, the most primary meaning of the word dharma is our own nature. The nature of anything is called dharma. Each soul is potentially divine. So what is our nature? We are divine. But at this moment, we have forgotten about it. That is what is called potentially we are divine. Means we are divine. That will never change. But we may not remember it all life. The whole existence is only to make this remembrance, bring back the remembrance. So that is called dharmamchara. So lead such a life and everything follows there. Whatever instructions we are going to discuss in future and you live that life, walk the talk and then slowly all the non-essentials will drop away. What remains will be ourselves. What it means is know who you are and that is true speaking, truth speaking. Truth speaking is true speaking. So tell I am Brahman. That is called telling the truth. I am so and so. I am a man. I am a woman. That is not the real truth from paramarthika view. But the real truth is I am Brahman. Of course, when I know I am Brahman, there would be nobody to tell. We are all talking about from our what is called prapanchika view, transactional view. So the goal of life is to know who we are. That is known as dharmamchara. Why dharmamchara? Our goal is to know who you are, what is our dharma, what is our nature. But here dharmamchara means everything that helps us to uncover the knowledge about ourselves. And what does that include? All the rituals. So all the actions that are prescribed, that are proscribed. Therefore, we should not neglect all the rituals, all the codes of conduct, etc. And if we do that, our evolution takes a longer time. Therefore, these are called values. What happens? And that is why we will have to... These are the important things. We have to know who we are. And when we know who we are, that is the real truth speaking. That was what we discussed in our last class. Then next we are going to enter Swadhyayan Ma Pramadaha. Swadhyayat Ma Pramadaha. Never neglect Swadhyaya. This also briefly we discussed. Adhyaya. Adhyaya means to study one's own nature. Swadhyaya, study one's own. So what is that? Study the scriptures. Study also one's own life. So slowly, by studying ourselves, by objectifying ourselves, we will come to know whether we are improving, whether there is any change in our life. Ma Pramadaha. Because do not neglect to find out where you are, what we are, whether any changes have taken place, whether we are progressing or standing still or even regressing. All these things come under the meaning Swadhyaya. And then we are not naturally inclined to do good things. All karmas are meant to reduce selfishness as much as possible and increase our attraction for God realization or our attraction for spiritual life. So that is why Swadhyaya, study of the scriptures. What do the scriptures tell us? That you are in ignorance now. You are overpowered by Maya or Vidya. How do we know? Because you are under the control of the three gunas and the whole sadhana is to be a master of the three gunas, not merely to be a slave of the three gunas. And remember, our body, our mind, the entire Jagat is what is called manifestation of the three gunas. Therefore, when we become gunatitas, go beyond gunas, that means master of the gunas, then we are called true knowers of Brahman. But for that at every step, we should not neglect reminding ourselves of the scriptural teachings. Scriptural teaching can mean not only studying the scriptures, but having satsanga. As Sri Ramakrishna says, now and then going into solitude and praying even deeper and self-examination and then always discriminating. Things come, things go, things change. Whatever are changing continuously in a flux, we should not be too much worried about them because good becomes evil. Evil also becomes good in course of time. So sinners become saints. This is how evolution takes place. But it is a one-way traffic. Saints will not become sinners. But until that time, goodness, evil, we have to battle with them. So that is why swadhyaya. And also when the student is with the guru, 24 hours a day practically, either directly or indirectly, he was only studying the scriptures. How come? Because the teacher may be not teaching 24 hours a day. There is a time for bathing and then for performing sandhya, vandana, etc. And there would be everybody has to take some part in the running of the ashrama, different activities. Otherwise, gurukula system will not go because no servants are available at that time. And what few hours are there? That one sits in front of the teacher and he will be expounding. But not only that, at other times, in any given situation, how is the guru, the teacher acting, reacting to various situations? I do not think we should ever imagine that every gurukula is full of peace, quietness, meditation. It is Svargaloka, where there are two people, some conflict will be there. So if anybody imagines conflicts with this one, that person will be terribly mistaken. Even if you study Sri Ramakrishna, Holy Mother Sharda Devi and all the direct disciples and all the lay devotees, do you think there were no conflicts of opinions? Definitely there will be there. If you open your eyes and study, you will get plenty of them. How much, how many times Narendra directly told Sri Ramakrishna, I do not believe you and it is not a very pleasant thing to hear about it. So then he was also criticizing some other people and then ridiculing other people. So many things, like normal life, maybe a little bit less, but nevertheless it will be there. Under those circumstances, what does the teacher do? How does he act? How does he react? How does he keep his mind calm and quiet? He may become angry, but that anger is not his master. It is he is the master of all these emotions. So these things, when we witness day after day until the student leaves that place, definitely it will have an influence and that is also called Adhyayana. That is also learning through imitation. So, but once the Gurukulam is left behind and the student has to come back, then there are two options. Either he can take to Brahmacharya. I do not want to enter into Grihastha Ashrama. I would like to continue my spiritual struggles, so I will take a vow to remain lifelong Brahmachari like Bhishma had done or he might even take Sannyasa. Here also a person, he vows, I will be lifelong Brahmachari or after some time I might renounce the world and don ochre cloth etc. and become a monk. But there are very few people. Most of the people, they have what is called natural desires. They want to enjoy each other and they want to earn money. They want to continue progeny and for such people, the instruction is never neglect to study the scriptures because they will remind us every day. How long should one go on studying? When a person realizes God, then it becomes a natural trait. His behavior will be like the behavior of a Jeevan Mukta. But until such time, one has to be studying the scriptures. And scriptures not only tell us what to do, what not to do, but at different stages, what dangers we can encounter, that also the scripture will be telling. So at every stage, appropriate for that stage, difficulties will be there. We should not forget about such things. Therefore, the teacher is giving these instructions. Swadhyaya Maa Brahmadaha. Never neglect Swadhyaya. So as just now we mentioned, when can a person stop studying the scriptures? When like Shri Ramakrishna, a person can say, Mother, here are all your scriptures. I make a garland of them and offer them at the lotus feet. From now onwards, you guide me. That is to say, when a person develops intuition, after that he can develop. Until that time, he has to be in intuition. Swadhyaya is one such thing. Satsanga, same thing. When we meet each other, when two Sadhakas meet each other, they warn. That is why, Sadhu, be careful. This is the clear warning for each other. So when a person returns from this Gurukula, he is still called Brahmachari. Brahmachari means a student of the Brahma or Vedas. Therefore, the teacher says, until you develop intuition or God or Divine Mother can direct you, until you purify to that extent, then you should continue to study the scriptures and then Shramana, Manana and then Edidhyasana. These three cover what is called the meaning of Swadhyaya. First you hear, go on cogitating and then try to transform your life. That is the meaning of Swadhyaya. So then, Mahapramadaha, never neglect. Even if you are at home, even if you are a householder and you are struggling with work, you should allot some amount of time every day for the study of the Vedas. But while working, if the work does not require one-pointed attention, for example driving, then one can repeat the name of God continuously. So even when we are at home or struggling with too much of work, nowadays all these computers, phones, etc. There was a time when people thought computers reduced the work, but now it has proven the opposite. They only increase the work and it is not uncommon to work 10 hours, 12 hours, 14 hours. And then where is the time for other parts of life? Therefore, even when we are struggling with a lot of work, we should devote every day to the study of the Vedas. At least we can also listen. Audio is available. So we also have seen this one. So Swadhyaya is a must. Satsanga is a must. Solitude is a must. Continuously discriminating what is changing and what is inevitable. The facts of life. What are the facts of life? That a person is born, he grows up and he becomes a youth, becomes middle-aged, becomes old-aged. Then less vigor, less energy. Diseases can step in. Accidents can happen. Finally, of course, death will come. This is called Shadurmi. And so one has to be very careful about that also. Then these are some of the few instructions. Then the next one, Acharyaya Priyam Dhanam Ahrutya. So this is called Guru Dakshina. Now very important for us to understand. What we received from the Guru can never be repaid back. It is impossible for us to pay back what the Guru really gives. Therefore, we have to offer. Also, you remember, the whole Gurukula is run freely. Sometimes if the teacher is very popular, there may be hundreds of students. So usually parents see that our children are getting benefit and therefore parents contribute. But same thing should be continued by the student who returns. When he gets married, then he settles down and then he starts earning some money. And out of that, whatever is possible, because everybody doesn't earn the same amount. Therefore, according to their capacity, that also further, some more things are coming. So don't forget what we owe to our Guru, teacher lifelong. It is Guru Dakshina has to be given lifelong. Simply doing Pranams are not going to help. So no Guru ever demands. You remember, if you study the life of Thakur, sometimes some devotees used to invite him. For example, Brahmo devotees. Out of his infinite grace, Ram Krishna goes there. But you know what happens? That he, the householders may not be aware of some of the traditions. When a Sadhu comes or when you go to a Sadhu, something has to be given. Maybe a fruit, maybe something which is useful, a piece of cloth, etc. But some householder devotees are not at all aware. And even that's why Ram Krishna instructs Yama also. Whenever you come, bring some trifling something. Maybe a bit of sugar candy. So and deliberately we have seen. So Ram Krishna asks, can you get a clay plate and a clay glass, etc, etc. And when he goes and the householders were not aware, can I have a drink of water? Usually in Bengal, that custom is there. So that custom is, if people will not, anybody comes, they will give something to eat. A cup of tea, a cup of coffee or some, what is called, soft drink or plain water with something. This is what they call, this is a gel cover in Bengali. Something must be given. That is a beautiful custom that we see there. In South India, we don't find that custom generally. Very few people do it. So Ram Krishna has to go on telling, I want to drink. And then later on, M came to know. So these devotees who invited or sometimes Ram Krishna himself invites himself and goes to these devotees' houses, they don't know. For example, Ram Krishna invited himself to Ishwar Chandra Vidya Sagar. He never invited Ram Krishna. He was only told, Ram Krishna wants to visit you. Of course, he agreed graciously. That is a different issue. So something has to be given. So there is a saying, when we visit a baby, because small children, they expect us to give some chocolates, lozenges, toffees, etc. or a respectful person, God, a king or a sadhu. We must give whatever. There is no rule what to take. Just take in a gratefulness because they will speak something very nice. So they don't demand. Guru doesn't demand. But it is taken for granted. Whenever we get any help from anybody in the Western world, we have to say, thank you. But then Western people are very good. So they help each other. That's why the society has a greater scope for development. And here, so Athidhi Devo Bhava, etc. By that, when suddenly somebody comes, then one must welcome them. And that is why one must be prepared to expect any number of unexpected people. Usually, you know, too many people will not come. So like that. That is called Dakshina. And whenever any puja is done or any Homa is done, some special ceremony is getting done by some Brahmin priest, etc. They also have to live. So they also have to be given something. That is called Dakshina. So that which we offer to Guru is called Guru Dakshina. But that which we offer to priests, etc., that is called Dakshina. So when the student reaches home, he takes a decision to enter into the next stage of life. Even the Brahmachari or the student who decides to become an Aishtika Brahmachari, he is entering either the Vanaprastha Ashrama or Sannyasa Ashrama. An Aishtika Brahmachari is as good as a Sannyasin also. So there is how much money the Guru never expects. But then if we are really commonsensical people, whatever we can afford according to our capacity. And Guru will be more than pleased. Or at least he should be pleased if he is a good Guru. So whatever the students have received from the Acharya, they have to pay back in the form of Guru Dakshina. That is why in the Bhagavad Gita also we get this particular topic. Seventeenth chapter we get Adakshina means if any religious activity is got done by others without giving anything to them or trying to give the least bit and that will not be fruitful. That is called Vidhihinam. That is unscriptural way of doing it. They should be fed and they should be given something. After all they also expect something because they also have to live the life. They are not going to do office work etc. This is their main job and then of course one should have that Shraddha. Shraddha Virahitam that also should not be there. Shraddha should be there. Dakshina should be there. Everything should be done properly etc. That is why in Manusmruti, Manu Dharma Shastra, there is something there. Only when a person has completely gotten rid of the debts, three types of debts, then only his mind becomes purified. Then only he will be really able to really devote to the realization of Brahman or Moksha. But if somebody neglects this, so Anapavritya means what? Not fulfilling these Dakshina etc. Mokshantu Sevamanu, a person without purifying himself, without getting rid of the obligations, he goes on trying to do Japa, Dhyana etc. thinking that he will be going to get Mukti. Slowly he will be going down and down and not really will be there. So Acharyaya Priyam Dhanam Ahrutya. So one should do. Then this is what is called a commandment. Not only an instruction but a commandment. So thereafter what should we do? So many of the students completed Brahmacharya Ashrama and they adopt a particular livelihood and they are leading. They also in due time give Guru Dakshina etc. But there are also some things to be done. They also have to perform certain things. Most important thing is what is called performing Pancha Maha Yagna. In fact it is said every time any human being is born, he is born a debtor. To five people he is indebted. Who are they? First of all to the Rishis, then to Gods who are blessing us and because of which the rains come down in time at the right season in the right amount. Then the father, mother, grandmother, grandfather are one's ancestors. One has to get rid of their debt also. So all these have to be done. Then of course there are so many Karmakanda rituals have to be done. Agnihotra has to be maintained. All this has to be done as a bounden duty by the householders and all this has to be done at home. So therefore there should be sufficient amount of wealth. That is why our Vedas prescribe through the instruction of the Guru after we are studying the Taittiriya Upanishad also Chandogya Upanishad and therefore here also a person has got these duties and he cannot do that. Therefore he has to lead a proper life, earn money as much as he can do and we will discuss about that point also right now. But the first thing is that it is said without a wife certain rituals cannot be done. Wife is necessary, then money is necessary and certain implements are also necessary and therefore one has to be ready and to maintain a family one requires money also. But then to continue these good manners and to propagate them that is also part of the duty. Nowadays some curious thing is happening. So many western societies are being studied now. So even UK, Germany, France, Australia, America, even Russia, even China. What is the surprising fact that is coming? The enjoyable things that are created by the discoveries of the science. They are making so many things, entertainment and different and endless varieties of foods etc. and places to go and see. All these things have increased the desires enormously. Not only desires, to fulfill those desires one requires two important things. One requires tremendous amount of money. Another, then the second requirement is money alone will not do. If I am working so hard and I don't have time, time also is necessary. The best food is given and for only 10 minutes time I have to finish that food. Really nobody can enjoy it. So time, sufficient time to enjoy and sufficient money also to fulfill these desires and therefore many parents they are limiting how many children they can have because producing children eats up not only money but time also. Hardly they can find if there are 3-4 children to look after them. The mother will be busy, the father is also busy. Where is the time for all these tempting objects to be enjoyed? And therefore the parents are choosing. Some even don't want to get married. Strange, but it doesn't mean they are living a life of a continence. No, no. They want to fulfill their desires but without taking the responsibility of entering into a rightful contract. They just want what is called free way of doing things without getting involved. Wood to God that they can really observe Brahmacharya. No, no. They want to fulfill their desires without thinking about any responsibilities. So this is how the nowadays western society is. As a result the number of children are being born less and less. And as a result what do you know what is happening? That you see to maintain a country in its prosperity, when talking about the whole country, one requires certain number of one's own country people. Suppose a less number of doctors, they can't run the hospitals. Less number of business people, so they have to borrow people. Less number of teachers in their educational system, then they have to borrow from other countries. So for every work, if there are not sufficient amount of one's own country people, they have to continuously borrow them to run the country. Running the country is like running a household but on a vast scale. That's all. And that the sociologists, they have found out that every year the number of children born to these parents are becoming less and less. So many countries are getting worried in future. Will we remain as Frenchmen, as Englishmen or as Germans? Because the moment the influx of poorer people especially from other countries in search of better job, better opportunities, better enjoyment, they flood together. And some of them, they demand that we will rule your kingdom. We will bring in our own customs, etc. Then no country can retain its individuality. And that is why being said, So what should one do? Keeping in mind that whatever I earn, I keep a part of it as Guru Dakshina. Or as what is called serving the society. Then I will have to produce sufficient number of children to keep our country exactly as it is. It has become a big worry as I said to many countries. If they cannot produce sufficient number to replace already aging population, then others will come in and they are not going to adopt the country into which they are entering. They will demand as their population grows that we will rule this country. We will make it our country and we are going to introduce our own laws, etc. So that is making so many people worried. So that's why you see what our Rishis are telling. Prajatantum maavyavatsetsi You have got certain desires and they are very natural. So legitimize them. Make all these through marriage. There are certain ceremonies. That is why for a Brahmana, there are nearly 40 samskaras are there. They are called sacraments. Every samskara is to make the person spiritually progress. So it starts with what is called. If we take birth, jatakarma, then namakarana, then mundana samskara, first shoving of the head usually in a temple, etc. Then after a few months when the child is ready to take the first solid food. This is very popular. So anna samskara, first anna. So they prepare some special things, offer it to God and then do some puja. And first some sweet, say payasam, etc. As we offer to the child. So that by eating prasadam, a child will develop into a healthy religious or spiritual personality. But after Brahmins, there will be less and less samskaras will be there. But the samskaras are meant to convert a person's life into a spiritual life. And so if the child has to grow up, then he has to go to Kuru Kula. If he is an upper class person, that is what this vijatva, second birth will come. Then having completed the studies, he will return. That is called samavartana, returning from Kuru Kula. For that, there is a samskara. After that, he might choose to get married, ivaha samskara. After that, on an auspicious day, husband and wife, both of them have to be joined together. And that is called garbha dana samskara. Then if the lady is pregnant, then after some months, seven or eight months, simantha samskara is there. So from birth until death and when a person dies, that is called antima samskara. Does it end there? No. After that, either yearly or sometimes monthly, what is called pinda dana, what is called shraddha karma has to be done. And I will also discuss about what is the shraddha karma, what is the importance of it. But what I am trying to tell is that all these things are involved in prajatantam ma vivatsyatsyih. That is, continue to produce children and then take responsibility. Why a guru or scripture should give this kind of what is called instruction? Is it not a natural desire that comes? Are they not going to do it? No. Do it legitimately where a society can retain its coherence. And then all the samskaras which this person had learned from his teacher, they should be also passed on and the parents responsibility until the children, especially if they are male children, grow up and then ready to join the gurukula. Until that time, the mother will be the first teacher. Father will be the second teacher. And every day, by practicing oneself, these samskaras slowly influence the person. And that was what Arjuna was talking about. Dharmenaste Kulam Krishnam. In the very first chapter, there is a big war that takes place. After that, the best of the men will be destroyed. Nobody wins a real war. After that, the what is called evil people take over the women folk, helpless people, especially in those days, even these days also. And then since these fathers are wicked, the mothers also slowly forget, their wives forget. And then as a result, these children that are born, they also are imbued with those vibrations which are not good for society. Kulam Krishnam. So the entire ancient system will collapse. When such a system collapses, then dharma will slowly disappear. And that is what is happening in this Kalikala. So Prajatantam. Now only sociologists are finding out, sufficient number of children have to be produced by every country. And it is a must, it is a duty, bounded duty. And then only that country can retain its individual nature, its peculiar language. Just imagine where in a country, foreign people, they migrate and start speaking their own language. And in course of time, the native people, they will be overwhelmed by the nature of these people who have gone there. And there is also some psychology here. When usually a poorer type of person or a person who gets less opportunity, when such a person goes to a foreign country in such better opportunities, his first thought will be, I want to be safe. Therefore, I want to produce as many children. So let our population who are migrating, let them grow. And then suddenly there is an influx of love for their language, for their culture, for their religious adherence, etc. And then if this trend continues, just imagine. So in France, for example, if other places come, flood it, and then start speaking their own language. Now, France will not be a French country. It will be some other country. UK will not be a UK country. It will be some other country. All these things, our ancient rishis have thought deeply. And then not only that, for the good of the many, the traditions that have been learned must be passed on from generation to the next generation. And that is one of the purposes of Praja Tantra. So thereby, what is happening? The person not only fulfills his very natural desires to propagate his own species, and at the same time, the person is also slowly inculcating into his own children. That's why they are called Atmaja. Therefore, through them, when he dies, then they will continue to offer their prayers to him. This is called Shraddha Karma, etc. And they are very effective. So not only for one's own enjoyment, but for the sake of the communal welfare, for the welfare of the whole country, that sufficient number of people should be produced. That's why Guru says, Praja Tantram Ma Evachit Seehi Do not destroy the tradition of continuing your progeny and then passing on all that you have learned from us to them. And also, when they are ready, then send them again to the Samguru Kula, finding out a best place, so that they in their turn will continue the same values. This continuation of values is the most important thing. That is why in the past, people, our Rishis, etc., the leaders of this society, they did not just leave a person. That you can just stay. That is why he says, Anashrami Natishthetha Kshanam Ekam Apidhvijaha So what happened? Ashramena Vinatishthan Prayaschatiyatehi Saha There is one Dharmashastra called Daksha Smriti. Anashrami Natishthetha Any person in any given country must belong to one of the Ashramas. What is it? Either Brahmachari Ashrama or Gayastha Ashrama or Vanaprastha Ashrama or Sanyasa Ashrama. What happens if a person, say for example, after returning from Gurukula, a person does not continue. He says, I will neither marry but I will do it. And nowadays it is happening that there are many people who do not want to get married. They want to remain single but they also do not want to go wrong. They attach themselves either to an Ashrama or to some social service organization and whatever time they are capable of giving, they want to serve the society through that. That is okay. This is a new system that is coming nowadays. But in the past, one must belong definitely to one particular Ashrama and especially Gayastha Ashrama. It is the prop for all the other Ashramas because money is not earned by the Brahmacharya Ashrama or in the Vanaprastha Ashrama or in the Sanyasa Ashrama. All the three Ashramas are totally dependent for their maintenance so that they can lead that life appropriate to that Ashrama. They all depend upon this Gayastha Ashrama either through Bhiksha or donation to the Gurukula etc. Especially those who are Naishtika Brahmacharis, they are supposed to go for begging and a Grahastha is bound in duty to help not one person but the whole village. If there are 50-100 families, all of them by turns, if they give a little bit, so there are wonderful traditions there. That is why the Guru is giving such strict instructions, absolutely beautiful instructions. That is a bound in duty in the Gayastha Ashrama so that the Panchamaha Yajnas can be done. And about this Panchamaha Yajnas, today only I will talk about it very briefly. That is why whenever a Yajna is done, it has twofold benefit. One is for the individual, he himself gets the benefit. Second, the whole society gets the benefit because so many people will come and they are fed also and usually some great soul like a Suta goes on telling and expounding the teachings of the scriptures in the form of Amar Chitra Katha or small stories like Mahabharata Ramayana, Bhagavatam, etc. Remember Bhagavatam, so many stories when Shukadeva was telling, expounding Bhagavatam, so many Rishis, Munis, that is devotees not only gathered but so many ordinary people also gathered for their sake. Bhagavatam, Bharatam, so many moral stories, stories to learn our lessons have been told. There are few points are there but here he says if you don't want to become a Brahmachari or Sanyasi, then you get married to a right girl chosen according to tradition and after that continue and produce children so that the children can be well taught so that the whole country, the whole society will get benefit. Aum Jananem Sharadaam Devem Ramakrishnam Jagat Gurum Pada Padme Tayo Sritva Pranamami Mohur Moho May Ramakrishna, Holy Mother and Swami Vivekananda bless us all with Bhakti. Jai Ramakrishna.
