Discussion on Ignorance (Avidya) and Knowledge (Vidya)

Question: Dealing with Ignorance in Daily Life

Speaker 1: Maharaj, there is the saying: "Where there is knowledge, there is ignorance." And when we, in our daily life – the stages where we're in – it seems like we're dealing more with ignorance, and we need to learn to cope up with ignorance and defects.

The Relationship Between Ignorance and Knowledge

Speaker 2: So what is the relationship between ignorance and knowledge? What is the function of knowledge? Slowly, to convert this ignorance into knowledge, isn't it? For that purpose, we must need – the very first step is called knowledge. You know what that knowledge is? "I am ignorant." "I am ignorant." That is the very first step in obtaining true knowledge.

Ignorance is not absence of knowledge. Ignorance is knowledge misunderstood, misinterpreted. The first step towards knowledge is to acknowledge that we are not knowledgeable, and that is the greatest knowledge. So then we take steps.

Ignorance as Wrong Knowledge, Not Absence of Knowledge

Speaker 2: And then ignorance has also – what you call – ignorance first. What is the first point I told you? Ignorance is not absence of knowledge, but wrong knowledge. You see, when a person is completely unconscious, he becomes ignorant, isn't it?

Speaker 1: Yes.

Speaker 2: That is called absence of knowledge – neither good nor evil. Yeah. But when we are awake, etc., or dreaming, we are not having absence of knowledge; we are having wrong knowledge. And this wrong knowledge finally teaches me, teaches everybody, that there is something wrong with this kind of knowledge. So that is how ignorance leads to knowledge.

Example: Tempting Food and Stomach Ache

Speaker 2: You want an example? You eat some tempting food, and it creates stomach ache. And first time you ignore. Second time you ate – second time stomach ache. Every time you eat – stomach ache. Did you now become enlightened?

Speaker 1: Yeah, found out the cause for the stomach ache.

Speaker 2: Ahhh. So that wrong knowledge – "this is excellent food" – is now instantly "it is unhealthy, poisonous food." So this is how the samsara is called ignorance.

Avidya as the Grace of Divine Mother

Speaker 2: And many people do not understand, they say it is mithya – no. It is the greatest manifestation of Divine Mother's grace. First, she takes us through this in order to awaken us. Only after going through this, then we become aware: "This is not good." And then he turns inward – from outside to inside. So this is how we have to understand, interpret it.

That's why Sri Ramakrishna says: the Divine Mother manifests both in the form of vidya as well as avidya. But we have wrong understanding of avidya after studying superficially some Advaitic works. They are meant for highly advanced spiritual people, not for ordinary people.

The Purpose of Samsara and Avidya

Speaker 2: So we have to understand the truth about this world. Everything is temporary. Everything only causes more misery. And these experiences – even for the dullest person – after more experience, he will be reluctantly awakened. And that awakening is the only purpose of...

Speaker 1: Samsara.

Speaker 2: Avidya. Avidya. And that is why what Holy Mother said:

Speaker 1: "Misery is the gift of God."

Speaker 2: So there it is – it is grace of God. Avidya is a grace of God.

Avidya as Preparation for Vidya

Speaker 2: What I say about avidya: it is the preparation for vidya. That which makes us fit to follow the path of vidya. Vidya means – don't call Advaitins' Advaitic knowledge. Vidya means bhakti, jnana, viveka, vairagya, bhakti yoga, karma yoga, raja yoga, any yoga. That's what I call vidya.

Okay, so that is what we need to understand crystal clearly: that avidya has the greatest goal, which is to bring us ultimately to God – self-knowledge. And that is why this thing is so beautifully seen.

The Sankhya Yoga Perspective on Prakriti

Speaker 2: So we have to understand – Sankhya – there is some yoga called Sankhya yoga, and you know what they say in this Sankhya yoga. So this avidya - prakriti is called avidya. But we say it is both vidya and avidya. The only purpose of prakriti is to lead each jiva: "You are not part of me, do not belong to me – you belong only to Purusha." And that is what the greatest sage Kapila is telling us.

Avidya as Correction, Not Punishment

Speaker 2: The only purpose of avidya is to lead us to God. If we do not listen with faith, it gives us – slaps us, kicks us, brings misery. But the purpose is not to punish. Even when the governments punish people, the purpose is not punishment. The purpose is to make the people behave properly. It is a correction.

Conclusion: The Unified Purpose of Vidya and Avidya

Speaker 2: Yeah, is the relationship not opposed but unified. They work together: "You prepare the body and mind, and I will lead that person to the highest goal."
