Question: Can Brother Lawrence's Experience Be an Example of Infinite Understanding?

Participant: Pranam, Maharaj. Maharaj, today you mentioned about two types of knowledge – finite knowledge and infinite knowledge. Right. So I want to confirm my understanding, Maharaj. When Brother Lawrence looked at the sprouting tree – yeah, he was transformed. So can that be an example of infinite understanding?

God's Grace, Not the Object, Brings Transformation

Response (Maharaj): Not exactly. He became conscious. There is something behind the scenes of this world, which is God who is making everything possible. It was dead winter. You know, in winter, most trees become deciduous trees. They shed all their leaves; they appear as if they're dead. When you don't see any leaf or anything, more or less you take for granted it is a dead tree. But we know that it is not a dead tree. But if it is a dead tree, even in spring, no leaves will appear.

But when he first saw it – through that event, God makes a person awake. It is not the tree; it is God's grace that evoked the consciousness of Brother Lawrence at that second. So the thought came – millions of people see the same sprout.

Participant: Yes.

Response: Do you think they are all transformed? No way. But his time has come; his love for God has matured, and that's why through that sight, it evoked something. It only worked like an instrument. We should not give anything else. And it evoked God consciousness so powerfully.

The Struggle After Transformation

Response: So transformation has come, but then also he said, "Ten years I have to struggle very much – just not to forget God, not to forget the presence of God." So that is God's grace that has come – that any event, like Bilvamangala becoming transformed because of that public woman's words. So also Tulasidasa.

Question: Is There a Difference Between Worldly and Spiritual Knowledge?

Participant: Sure. Yes, Maharaj. So there is a difference between worldly knowledge and spiritual knowledge, correct? Correct.
