Om Jananem Sharadam Devem Ramakrishnam Jagadgurum Pada Padme Tayo Sridhva Pranamam Imuhurum Oho Om Vasudevasutam Devam Kamsachanuram Ardhanam Devaki Paramanandam Krishnam Vande Jagadgurum Sarva Upanishadho Gaho Dogdha Gopalanandana Partho Vatsa Sudhir Bhokta Dogdham Geetha Amritam Mahat Mokam Karoti Vachalam Pangum Langhayate Girim Yat Kripatamaham Vande Paramanandam Adhavam Bhagavan Krishna is graphically describing how the three gunas Sattva, Rajas and Tamas manifest within each one of us. Every creature including the lowest manifestation of life an amoeba, a mosquito, a bird, a plant, an animal living as well as non-living, everything manifests these three qualities. I mentioned about it already but just to remind ourselves, there is a beautiful mountain and here is an okay mountain and here is a mountain which is ugliest, most dangerous and people don't want to look at it. You look at a beautiful river with a murmuring sweet sound. The water is extremely tasty, pure, cool, healthy, uncontaminated. Here is a river for whatever reason man-made or nature-made, dirty, poison, cannot even touch, cannot even be nearer that. So take a mosquito. Three types of mosquitoes will be there. Sattvika mosquito will not give you so much trouble. Rajasika one will be very annoying. Tamasika one is one you are able to catch and kill the soonest, the easiest to kill. So you can say everything is manifestation of Sattva, Rajas and Tamas. Bhagawan had chosen seven important topics and why seven? Because the whole life cycle consists of only these seven. Intelligence, action, knowledge, willpower, happiness, understanding and the way, attitude with which we do. It is nothing but practical Vedanta. So we have covered until now five types of manifestations of Sattva, Rajas and Tamas. What are they? First of all, we have seen three types of Sanyasa. Sanyasa means trying to give up attachment to the results of action, to the action itself and to the kartrutva bhava, to the egotism. Then we have seen three types of knowledge, three types of actions, three types of people who do, the doers, workers. Then three types of buddhi, understanding. And now we are coming to the last two, another two more subjects, again subdivided as manifestations of Sattva, Rajas and Tamas. What are they? Dhriti, resolution, power of will, power of resolution, tenacity, that is very important. What is it? Why is it important? And how is guna's mould, shape? That we are going to discuss. But first of all, I have very briefly dealt with the third type of buddhi. And then we have to discuss about what is the first type? Sattvika buddhi. What is it? That understanding, that intelligence which knows the paths of work and renunciation, what is right and what is wrong, what should be feared and where there need be no fear, and finally what is bondage and liberation, and that intellect which crystal clearly understands all these aspects, that is pravrutti-nivrutti, karya-karya, bhaya-bhaya and bandha-moksha. That is the highest manifestation of intelligence, sattvika buddhi. Then that which understands partially, understands 50% rightly, 50% wrongly. Why? Because this person is motivated, he is attached, his mind is uncontrolled somewhat. Even though he knows it, only 50% he does it right, 50% not so right. Naturally the result also will be there. And why doesn't this person do it? Because the mind is covered, the intelligence is covered with prajoguna. That is called prajasika buddhi. yaya dharmam adharmam ca karyam ca akaryam eva ca a yadhavat prajanati buddhi sva-partha rajasi Then we entered into what is tamasika buddhi. adharmam dharmam iti ya manyate tamasaurta sarvartha viparitams ca buddhi sva-partha tamasika This tamasika person, that means when tamoguna covers up, envelops the buddhi, the faculty of intelligence, understanding, inevitably he understands right as wrong, wrong as right, and with tenacity he clings on to that, and then in everything, because his mind, his intellect, his understanding is covered, whatever he turns his attention to, everything he understands in just the opposite way, not even one modicum of right understanding. What can the poor fellow do? So that which, that intelligence which enveloped in darkness, that is tamoguna regards adharma, unrighteousness as dharma, and doesn't give up that view, and views everything, whatever he has to do, whatever he has to understand, in a perverted light, that intellect, O Arjuna, is tamasika. This was what we were discussing. Slightly I want to add to what I have, we had already discussed. First of all, the knowledge of this tamas covered buddhi, enveloped buddhi, about everything this person understands, that tamoguna presents it in the opposite way, that is why it is called tamasika intelligence. And this is so beautifully put, ultimately it is the Divine, it is God, it is Ishwara, who manifests as sattva, rajas and tamas. Again and again we have to keep that point in mind. That's why, yad evi sarvabhuteshu brahante roopena samsthita The Divine Mother who is manifest in every being, in the form of brahante, delusion, completely opposite way of understanding, right as wrong, wrong as right. That is the first thing. Second is, this person will not listen to anybody, even out of compassion, out of love, out of a wish for welfare, if some good soul wants to point out the right way, he will not listen. On the contrary, he will take decisions based upon this brahante buddhi. That is why the first chapter of the Bhagavad Gita itself is called Vishadha Yoga, the result, inevitable result of an intelligence covered with tamoguna, darkness or wrong understanding. It ends, it manifests as a result only Vishadha, suffering. And see, in the first chapter, we get a beautiful description, a little bit more explanation of this quality which is being under discussion by us now. Just look at Arjuna, he was overcome with moha, moha means brahante, brahante means tamoguna. Tamoguna causes this wrong understanding. What did he do? 100% he believed that I am right and Krishna is wrong. Unfortunately, Krishna happened the victim. In front of him, here also I can make a little bit of fun. Let this Arjuna go to Duryodhana or Dushyasana and talk this philosophy and immediately they will take a big sword and take this opportunity to finish because all of them are aware if we can finish Arjuna, the entire Pandava army is finished. There is nothing left out and which is absolute truth also. And that's why Krishna had to work so hard to make this what is called tamo buddhi understand. You want to give up? You are not fit for a sanyasi. You are not fit even to be a householder, let alone a sanyasi. A fellow who promises everybody I will lead you to victory and having come to the battlefield, suddenly he changes his mind, decides to take sanyasa and run away. Do you think anyone should trust such and such kind of fellow? In today's terms, he will be court-martialed. Not only he suffers, but he will be the cause of suffering of everybody else. So this tamo buddhi or buddhi that is enveloped by tamo guna and here is a hope for us. What is it? Tamo guna and buddhi need not be together always. They are two separate things. So it is a temporary phenomena. Whether a person's buddhi is covered with tamo guna, vraja guna, even sattva guna. It's only a temporary phenomena. The real buddhi is that which goes out of these three qualities and understands, I am divine. Not potentially divine. Sattva guna gives us that understanding. I am potentially divine. But the buddhi, intelligence, without any of these gunas, including sattva guna, it knows. It doesn't understand. It knows, I am Brahma. So that is the goal. Therefore, a guna is a temporary cloud. It may be a thick black cloud, a little bit of whitish cloud, or no cloud at all. Sattva guna means no cloud at all. So this person firmly believes. Which person? A person whose buddhi is enveloped in complete darkness because of tamo guna. He thinks dharma is dharma. Wrong is right. And so Arjuna's illustration, he gave the reasons also. First class reasons. And here also we have to pause and understand that nobody, if two countries fight, go to war, there is no winner because both of them lose in every way. And in that sense, Arjuna was completely right. Traditions will be destroyed, but though it is the truth, that truth is not appropriate for that particular occasion. So these people who think they are right, in the Mundaka Upanishad, they are called avidyayam, antar-vartamanah, swayam dhirah, panditam anyamanah, dandramyamanah. So these fellows go on being reborn again and again and suffer terribly, horribly, millions of times. But because they are potentially divine, there is a teleological urge that will not allow them, anybody, to be there at the bottom forever. Sooner or later, it will make them up. There is a beautiful saying, putting these same teachings of division, of intelligence into three, a wise person has made it into four categories. Because I remembered it, I thought we can enjoy it. I don't know who said that, where he said that, but I clearly remember reading about it. The type of person, lowest type of person, is a fool. Why? He who knows, knows not. He who knows not and knows not that he knows not, a person is an agnani and he doesn't know he is an agnani. He thinks he is an agnani. He is a fool. Shun him from a long distance. Second, a better person, higher person, he who knows not, but knows that he doesn't know, ignorant, teach him. The second person, he is completely aware, I do not know, I am an ignorant person. And he is open, that very admission, I am an ignorant person. In contrast to the lowest person, he thinks that I know everything. Hamsa Janta. Teach him, the second person. Third person, he who knows and knows not that he knows. He is asleep, wake him up. The third person is much higher. He knows really, but he is not aware that he knows. As if a person, like Einstein sleeping, he knows that he is the world's best physicist. But while sleeping, he is as good as a child, a fool, like anybody else. But the moment he is woken up or he wakes up, he fully claims I know so much. And that brings in really humility. This is the third type of person who is much better. And there is another type of person, this is the highest type of person. He who knows and knows that he knows, is wise, follow him, beg him to teach you and adore him, be open to his teaching and thereby you will also get the benefit. And Mundaka Upanishad adds one more. There is a fifth variety. What is that variety? He knows not, but he prides he is the greatest knower. That is what I have quoted earlier. So, not only that, they think that we are capable of teaching others, leading others, just as a stupid blind fellow leading other blind people. One ignorant person trying to lead other ignorant persons. He is the worst type of humanity. So, these are the five types. And these people are not open. That is why Vibhishana, how much teaching he gave to Ravana, but not only did not listen, he said, you unfortunately happen to be my brother, that's why I am unable to kill you, but get out of this place. I don't want to see your dirty face. And then that is what Vibhishana had done. And Kamsa, how many people advised him, your sister only, do not give trouble, Karmapala will come, and if somebody has to kill you, after all, they can kill you. And this Kamsa is closely related to Jarasandha. And this Kamsa, he consoles Jarasandha so much, he gives the highest Advaita Vedanta Kamsa teaches to everybody. But when it comes following himself, he goes back. This Kamsa's greatest friend, Shishupala, Tantavakthara, Rukmi, Rukmi's sister, Rukmini, literally, Shri Krishna had to abduct her through a charioteer, but not like Ravanasura abducted Sita. In fact, the lady instigated, at this time, I will be available for you to abduct me, because I will be coming before the marriage takes place to this temple, and everybody will be completely unguarded at that time, you come and take me. And Shri Krishna kept his chariot ready, and this lady literally jumped into the chariot to be driven away, and she was so happy. O Krishna, now even my brother cannot do anything, because this Shishupala, to whom she was about to be married, he was a person with a tremendous amount of egotism. What? The lady who has been taken away, do you think I am going to marry such a kind of worst kind of lady? And Rukmini used that stratagem, once I spend some time with you, no self-respecting king is going to take me back. Of course, it is a beautiful incident, and Bhagavatam describes it so graphically, but the point I am trying to teach is that this person doesn't listen at all. If only we listen, open, keep your eyes open, that's what every great sage had taught. So, a person whose intelligence is completely covered up with this kind of tamoguna, not only he doesn't understand, he is not even ready open to understand. Naturally, this is one forest manifestation of sattva and as I mentioned earlier, intelligence is the only instrument through which we obtain knowledge and if this instrument is blunt and broken and completely useless, the type of resultant knowledge which comes through that will be the most dangerous thing at all. So, Swami Yathishan Maharaj used to give the example of Hitler. Hitler has got tremendous amount of intelligence, he has got tremendous willpower, he has got tremendous amount of concentration, but because his intelligence is covered completely with the thick, he was only daydreaming about which we are going to hear it very soon. Three types of willpower and then he really thought, he hypnotized himself into thinking, I am going to conquer the whole world and 1000 years of age that is my kingdom will prevail here. Now, having so beautifully, so graphically in such a detailed manner described these five subjects sanyasa, karma, jnana, buddhi and the type of person who performs now Krishna is going to explain. Intelligence is there, many of us are very intelligent then why are we not passing the exams brilliantly, why are not we become distinguishing ourselves as great people in whatever field because intelligence is there but it is unfortunately that required amount of willpower power of resolution is lacking and why is it lacking is it lacking in everybody, no sattvika people it is 100% working that's why they are so successful in life in rajasika people it works intermittently and that's why they become successful they also become failures sometimes they are happy, sometimes they are unhappy and the quality of happiness is not 100% like sattvika people's happiness that we are going to discuss in the future coming three verses but beginning with this 33, 34 and 35 sattvika willpower rajasika willpower and tamasika willpower are going to be discussed let us take up the 33rd verse this is all about sattvika dhriti because dhriti means willpower dhriti means strong power of resolution dhriti means that tenacity where a person will not give up until one reaches the target which one fixed for oneself until a person reaches his goal his destination his journey will not come to an end and let there be a million obstacles so long as last breath is there he will not give it up and such a person has got the real sattvika dhriti and a person who sometimes gives up sometimes takes up such a person has got rajasika dhriti and then what is the tamasika fell? Peepoopeesu that fellow he is waiting for the slightest excuse it is very beautiful breeze it is spring season it will not come it will be only for a short time let us enjoy it is raining I can't do anything it is hot, impossible to stir from the house oh it is so cold you expect me to go to the office to the school to open the books I want to be in bed with a warm blanket what you call comforter and do you know that nobody can give me so much of comfort as this comforter so all these things indicate a tamasika dhriti this is what we are going to discuss dhriti means that special power of will not only that it has many other meanings we will discuss about it so in the 33 verse the fortitude by which the functions of the mind the prana and the senses oh partha are regulated that fortitude unswerving through yoga is sattvika this is one of the most marvelous shlokas having discussed five manifestations of the three gunas now we are entering into the subject called dhriti now intelligence is ok intelligence will not achieve anything unless it is put into practice and many of us we put this into practice but do we have that dhriti that resolution that will power through which we can continue it that is being discussed here the whole scripture is about yoga means that which slowly leads us to god through activity through emotion through will power and through intellect four yogas so that a person who is practicing this yoga and all the practice of the yoga has to do only with this dhriti if a person has dhriti resolution, will power will come, attitude will develop knowledge will be best knowledge and his activities will be the most desirable activities and the result will be the most desirable result therefore yoga is very necessary yoga is not some peculiar weird practice yoga is nothing but pure will power that is yoga could do only for the higher ideals that is called yoga and vyavichari means that which is intermittent is a person takes up he continues then he gives up, then he falls and some people never get up some people try feebly for a few times but there are a few fortunate people they say let the body go that's what Buddha did until I attain that final illumination this body is not going to get up from the seat even if death comes all the flesh will dry up bones will become powdery etc. so this is what is being said by the practice of this yoga spiritual disciplines which never deviates from its set goal a type of will power is developed will power is like muscle power all of us are endowed with muscle power nobody is born like a Bhimasena like a Sando but there are ways go to gymnasium take a walk swim, lift weights run, in so many ways we can develop the power of the body of the intellect, of the emotion of the aesthetic sense of the moral sense and unless we do that spiritual progress is not going to be successful at all but the most important factor which assures our success is this will power that is why the difference between man and man is the difference between will power that's what Bhagwan Krishna is telling here the practice of yoga is meant only for one purpose that is develop this tremendous power called the power of the will power of resolution once a person develops and then direct it to the highest goal intelligence will be highest intelligence knowledge will be the highest knowledge the goal will be the highest goal and this person also does it exactly as he is directed by the scriptures the activities will be commensurate with the scriptural spiritual teachings and ultimately it is inevitable that he attains what Sri Ramakrishna calls Brahmananda there is no doubt about it so this is what is partha yaya avyabhicharya dhritya so dhritya that will power, what am I expected yes I have got this will power, what am I expected to do with that will power use it, how manaha prana indriya kriyaha dharayate that is to say control your physical body control your energy control your thoughts control your buddhi then control your emotion in the form of lower happiness all these perfect controls over the pancha koshas or three body models then you will understand who you really are so that dhritya resolution which increases our spiritual practice and we do our spiritual practice joyfully, earlier we saw dhritya and utsaha tremendous amount of enthusiasm and control our body means what, our body our sense organs and fulfilling our natural so called mistakenly called natural appetites like sex like food etc. we have to control every sense organ needs to be controlled mind has to be controlled buddhi, the determining faculty that has to be controlled and then ultimately even if I am happy we have to control and say you are ok for now but so long as you are got, sometimes you are got, sometimes you are lost, that is not the type of happiness I want I don't want to have happiness I want to be happiness and that is what he is telling that manaha pranaha indriya kriyaha dharayati, they are completely brought under control what does it mean, that fortitude which completely controls the body, the prana means energy, the thoughts, mind control and the buddhi my perfect determination and finally even any worldly happiness and that dhruti, will power which will throw aside anything that is short that is incomplete and that is impermanent and strives to go beyond time, space and causation that dhruti is called sattvika dhruti and the goal is from the tamasika dhruti progress into the rajasika dhruti, progress into sattvika dhruti and finally separate oneself from there and know that I am beyond the gunas to go beyond the gunas that is the one, therefore it is said for attaining spiritual success, spiritual progress clear intellect crystal clear understanding alone is not sufficient one requires a strong will power in order to implement one's knowledge one's understanding one requires tremendous will power to control the body the energy, how we are spending our time, our energy, our thoughts our goals even overcome the lower happiness, sacrifice the lower happiness in order to attain to the highest happiness, so many people because they are overcome by tamo guna, raja guna they say luck, some people say I can control the powers of God I can get siddhais or if I worship grahas all the planets then I will escape, stupid people do not understand one cannot escape the results of one's own karma phala we are puppets in the hands of fate this is the philosophy of a tamasic fellow, that's why Swami Vivekananda's teachings are unequal so unequivocally he declares these teachings, what I want the muscles of iron and nerves of steel inside which dwells the mind of the same material that of which the thunderbolt is made strength, manhood shatravirya brahma tejas this is what I want everybody on earth, not only Indians to develop and that is the reason why Swami Vivekananda has said now Indians are thinking they are sattvika people but they do not have the buddhi to understand that they are enveloped with the biggest tamoguna, darkness therefore they have to be aroused, that's why so ardently he had recommended let every Hindu consume meat and so many fellows, oh himsa it is injuring other creatures, a cow is our mother, a bull is our father, and Swamiji said yes that is true, otherwise who can give birth to such talented stupid fellows like you, excepting a bull and a cow, he made fun of some of the people that came to him in this way and most people fall into that category it is what you call animal intelligence animal will, animal propensities, so that is why he says in another lecture that all men were so constituted that in their minds all these elements, philosophy mysticism, emotion and work were equally present in full measure that is the ideal my ideal of a perfect man, that's why you know the emblem that was specially created by Swami Vivekananda it is anybody who looks at it, so what is that let karma, let intellect, let action let intellect, let emotion, let will power combine harmoniously together and direct towards the highest goal the result will be the knowledge of the Paramatma represented here by the Paramahamsa, the great swan, that I am that so and deliberately he has created this to indicate the future ideal, not for Indians only, for the whole world so there is there are books are coming now that they are on the will power and these books there is one book which I have read, there are many books the question was solved is there something called will power, yes there is and does it make any difference, yes it makes all the difference between a person who is happy and then remember success is not happiness happiness is success, a person is very successful, he earns money he becomes CEO of a huge company but he is profoundly unhappy, that is the worst failure in any man's life a poor man having very little to eat or drink or sleep on, if he is a happy person, he is much better person, more successful person than the person these subjects were discussed what is will power so is there such a thing called will power, yes does it make any difference in one's life yes, all the difference between success and failure happiness and unhappiness can it be developed, yes scientifically one can develop all these things I don't remember the author's name if I remember I will tell you but the what is called will power that is the title will power and a new perspective on life I think something like that is there so a sattvika person is one who practices yoga has perfect control over all his coverings the body, the energy prana, the thoughts the mind, the decisions the buddhi and finally he is ready to give up temporary, short limited pleasures in order to attain the highest pleasure naturally the question comes, who is a person, dhriti, whose will power is rajasic will power or will power that is covered by prajogna, this is clearly indicated in the 34th verse yaiyato dharmakama arthaan dhritya dhare yatey arjuna prasangena falakamsri dhriti sa partha rajasi arjuna now learn from me what is called rajasika dhriti look at a person what does he do he knows what is dharma and he knows he has got some amount of dhriti, will power and he does it exactly like the sattvika person more or less what is the problem he doesn't want spiritual progress though he claims he professes I want spiritual progress he worships gods and goddesses he believes in spiritual life and somewhat he practices also but every time mahamaya comes in the form of some happiness he falls like a pack of cards so every time whatever he does is one question is so what type of happiness am I going to get from this activity and how much of happiness am I going to get from this activity, these two answers determine the course of action which this person takes suppose he comes to know that you will get tremendous amount of happiness but may be after next birth or after 500 births, oh I want to see it right now I have no patience to wait, I am not even sure whether there is going to be a next birth at least for me, so his dhriti, his will power says I want to run after something which will give me happiness here and now so even though many people are teaching him trying to teach him about God, about long lasting happiness eternal happiness, infinite happiness, this person he says yes yes yes I understand all that but at this moment I am not ready for it Swami Vivekananda used to give beautiful joke in a church once a priest Christian priest got carried away and he was perhaps his subject was about heaven and immediately he shouted all those who wish to go to heaven you step into the left side of the church and everybody rushed one fellow remained on the right side and the priest got very angry because he cannot tolerate anybody doesn't obey his implied words John don't you want to go to heaven the man coolly replied yes of course I want to go to heaven, then why did you not step to the left side coolly John replied I thought you are going right now definitely I want to go but not now when I am about to die then after death I want to go to heaven, I am not ready now all the other fellows who rushed to the left side are also same fellows but they did not understand the implication, they are like sheep that's why Christ was called shepherd, anyway so here is a Rajasic person and his dhriti manifestation of will power is covered by Rajoguna so what does he do yaya dhritya Rajasika dhritya covered up by which Rajasika cloud, this person's dhriti or the will power dharma kamarthan dharayate, he wants to practice what is right, he wants to practice what is good he wants to obtain the results he wants to enjoy the results when not only after death but right now if he is given a choice all these things will be yours in heaven not here he will say I don't want I want both there also but I will think about it later on I want it right now such a person prasangena, whatever the occasion comes, he looks at the occasion is it going to give me the happiness right now and here visible and graspable within a short time so if it is, yes I will practice this and sacrifice, I will use my time my buddhi, if not no, such a person is carried away by what? phala kankshi he is carried away by a strong desire for to enjoy the fruits of his practice of dharma etc this is what is being told the action that is obligatory and is done without love or hate by one who desires no fruit and who is free from attachment that action is characterized by sattva which we discussed in our 33rd verse but here is a person whose understanding is covered with rages and here what does he do? this person's perseverance, commitment not for spiritual success but same will power he wants to use for the sake of material success he wants, he has got dhriti but he will not want spiritual progress he says I will think about it later on but the person he performs good things and he has got some amount of faith but unfortunately his manifestation of dhriti covered with prasangena as the occasion arises he loses the vision of the long term goal he wants only enjoyment of the fruits that are immediately or very soon available and he is prepared to exercise his will power only when he is assured that the results will be experienced by him right now and if possible after death also such a kind of will power which doesn't look towards the spiritual progress but looks only towards the short term temporary results which can be seen right now and here which can be experienced such a type of dhriti will power because it doesn't work in spiritual life such a person is called that kind of will power is called Rajasika will power so Rajasika person is not very much interested in Moksha, he is only interested in Dharma, Artha and Kama for that he is prepared to use exercise his will power but he is only looking forward towards temporary results but this is much lower than Satvika person's dhriti but much higher why? because at least this person follows Dharma follows what is right refrain from doing wrong things but all motivated by short term experience of expectation of results. Now the third lowest type of will power, what is it? In the 35th shloka yaya svapnam bhayam shokam vishadam evaja na vimunchati durmedha dhritihi sa partha tamasi. Now Krishna is explaining in this 18th chapter, 35th shloka the will power that usually possessed by the Tamasika people that is to say the will power of a person which is covered, enveloped by Tamoguna that dhriti specifically exhibits certain type of characteristics as the result of that Tamasika will power and what are they? The lord is beautifully describing the characteristics Hey Partha, first of all a lord gives an epithet to this fellow, durmedha means an idiot an ignorant person, a fool an idiot, a moody fellow, a fellow who understands everything in the opposite way and that firmness by which a stupid person doesn't give up sleep, fear grief, despondency and sensuality that will power which doesn't give up, not ready to give up, not even thinking of giving up Oh Partha, is called Tamasika dhriti, that dhriti is of the nature of Tamas, beautiful characteristics Swapna, Bhaya, Shoka, Vishada and Madha, so let me first narrate, this story is well known to many of our Bengali devotees, but a king had arranged a feast and people were accustomed they became lazy, the royal treasury was being exhausted then the king came to his senses he thought he could feed everybody even if they are lazy now he had to heed the advice of the minister and said only we will be feeding those who are really lazy not those who claim we are lazy but really lazy so one day he announced only really lazy people will be fed, everybody else has to go back to their normal life but by this time everybody thought this king is a fool, everybody claimed we are all very lazy people so we all deserve to be fed right royally and then the minister devised a way, they constructed a big kamyana, a big shed under which these people used to be fed and this is made up of a thin strip of cloth and next to noon when these fellows were happily eating and by the commandment of the minister, a servant went and quietly lighted up, put fire in the middle of the tent and as soon as a wisp of smoke is smelt by people immediately they left everything and ran helter skelter only two people were left out and they have eaten the food and they don't have the energy even to wipe their faces and face was full of this eaten little bit remnants and two dogs were licking the mouth of these two fellows and slowly the fire was coming and it started burning the back of one fellow and he is addressing the other fellow and said peepoo, he could not he did not want even to utter full words that is my back BB back burning short language, so shortcut language, back burning BB that means you do something about it and the other fellow even more lazy than this fellow, he said peeshoo, peeshoo means turn back and sleep, you just turn your back that's all, if that side is burning, you just turn your back and the minister observed these two and he said okay, only these two people are genuinely lazy people only they deserve to be fed and from next day only those two people are going to be fed so most people they don't go to that extent but even to become that lazy one has to work very hard these two fellows mentioned they must get gold medal actually for their laziness they are genuinely lazy people but most people the one smoke, danger pain, immediately they will become very active, extremely active, for such people there is a way they can slowly progress, how to know who is this fellow and whose will power is completely covered up by that will power which is the lowest manifestation because it is covered by Tamoguna Swapna this fellow always he is only dreaming a wonderful beautiful girl will come and she will marry me and she will make me very happy and one day I get a diamond I become the richest person one day the king will offer me in marriage his own daughter and I will be the son in law and everybody will be at my back and call so this what is called like what we call tramps just like tramps whole life lying down and never give up even if they are suffering also so even if they are suffering they are not prepared to give up this Swapna, dream day dream, night dream every type of dream, then Bhayam so many things frightening things in life even though they know even though they are frightened but they are not ready to do something about it so they go on mugging what is called swimming in that dirty water of this Bhaya fear, all sorts of fears is there bodily fear and sense organs will be failing or so many things will be there but they don't even think about it this is called Bhayam if I do like this then my future will be closed, book I can never be happy and that is a frightening thought no, they are not ready to give up then what is their face like? Shokam as if embodiments of grief, Vishada not even for a second even if somebody treats them to a good treat good food, good cloth, good everything they will be oh it is ok for now but after sometime it will be horrible, terrible even their very outlook will be morose, dark unhappy outlook and Vishadam their whole bodily expression will be only like that Shoka and Vishada so Shoka is mental attitude Vishada is a facial, external physical expression, everything whatever you see their rooms you see their cloths you see their body everything will be unclean impure, dirty and such people are not ready even though they are suffering and then finally they will not listen to anybody but they pride themselves we are the happiest people on earth Mada that is these five things dreams fear, unhappiness and external ill health and then this terrible pride that we know what we are doing you don't need to come and teach us this kind of Mada means terribly egotistic they will not even listen to anybody and so they will not do the slightest effort to get rid of them so they themselves sometimes understand they don't they are not happy, they are suffering and all because of what their will power is covered with that peculiar type of Tamoguna and because of that all these results will come so they are not able to get out of that vicious circle and when we see these characteristics exhibited in anybody's life he is called he is Drithi, his will power is called Tamoguna covered will power and there is a little more, we will talk about it in our next class Om Vasudeva Vasudham Devam Kamsa Janura Marthanam Devaki Paramanandam Krishnam Vande Jagat Gurum May Ramakrishna Holy Mother and Swami Vekananda bless us all with Devaki E Ramprishna
