Om Yogena Chittasyapadena Vacham Malam Sharirasya Chavayidhyakena Yopakarottam Pravaram Muninam Patanjalim Pranjali Rana Dosmi I bow to the eminent sage Patanjali who removed the impurities of the mind through yoga of speech through grammar and of the body through medicine. In our last class we had been discussing what is the greatest obstacle, only obstacle to spiritual life and that is egotism. Not ego but egotism. How does this egotism or misidentification of the ego with certain things how does it bind us? What is the factor? Eight factors are there. Modesty, hatred, fear, doubt, disgust, noble lineage, creed and good conduct. Briefly we discussed about them. Now let us turn to what Sri Ramakrishna has to say about this egotism. What is egotism? Sri Ramakrishna used to say you may indulge in thousands of reasonings but still the eye comes back. You may cut the peepal tree to the very root today but you will notice a sprout springing up tomorrow. Man's ego itself is maya. It is the veil that shuts out the light. Verily with the death of the eye all troubles cease. If by the grace of the Lord a man once gains the knowledge that he is not the doer then he assuredly becomes a Jeevan Mukta one freed in this very life and transcends all fear. What is maya? Maya means this sense of distinction and because of it that the world continues. Maya means sense of distinction. When I say I am this it means I am not anything else. That's what it really means. People suffer endless miseries on account of their egoism and at last they say not I, not I. It is thou, O God. It is thou. Sri Ramakrishna used to tell a very famous story. The story of a calf. You know it says Hamba Hamba I Me At last a cotton corder comes and then it starts saying Tuhum Tuhum There is a pun on this sound that comes Tui Tui There is the sound that comes. Until that time the troubles will not cease. But there are two types of egos. One ripe and the other unripe. Nothing is mine. Whatever I see, feel or hear even this body itself is not mine. I am always eternal, free and all-knowing. Such ideas arise from the ripe ego. This is my house. This is my child. This is my wife. This is my body. Thoughts of this kind are the manifestation of the unripe ego. The ego that asserts I am the servant of God is characteristic of the true devotee. It is the ego of knowledge. Vidyamaya also is called the ripe ego. That is the solution. So what is the remedy? How do we get rid of the egotism? There are two ways. If a person is following the path of knowledge he says I am that Aham Brahmasmi If he is a devotee then the other way is I surrender myself to you. Patanjali advocates the second method. Surrender. Ishwara Pranidhana The very second chapter started with Tapaha Swadhyaya Ishwara Pranidhana Austerity Study of the scriptures which means holy company meditation on scriptural passage study of one's own mind etc. But finally it is the surrender. Both result in the same which is it removes the egotism and we remain as we are. One important point here is many people they say this I has to be destroyed. Destruction is not what is meant. It can never be destroyed. But it can be changed, transformed, expanded. So how this expansion should come? Through the destruction of the limitedness. When we say I what do we mean by I? This body, this mind complex. So from this springs everything else. What is the way? Expand it. That is why God created this world. There is first one person then he gets married becomes two then children come many and finally he goes on expanding until he says I am this entire universe. Expansion. And to be expanded we have to cut this limitedness. How do we cut? There are several methods. We will take some examples quite a number of examples in today's class. What is most important for us is it is first we have to destroy the limitedness then expansion will come transformation will come. One of the most important characteristics which help us to destroy our present limitation is also known as obedience. Obedience means nowadays people don't want to obey. Why should I obey? That comes out of egotism. Why should I obey you? Am I any less? The question is not whether you are less or more. It is to remove the limitedness. There is so much of rebellion against this simple concept of obedience. But just look at the life of great souls any realized soul the first thing that comes is absolute obedience. We shall take some examples but here I would like to take one beautiful example. There was a Christian saint Saint Simeon Stylites for more than 30 years he lived on a almost 40 or 50 feet tall tower very narrow tower he never used to come down. The space was so limited and he was he could not even stretch himself properly. Either he sits or he stands and most of the time he was seen only as standing and praying to God. You know when we look at this kind of austerities then people they have tremendous amount of reverence for them. Because it requires tremendous amount of will power even to do that. So what happened? So many people used to adore him. After around 30 years he was a Christian. So some Christian superiors they wanted to test has his ego become too much because so many people are paying reverence to him. He also acquired some powers. Whatever he says it comes true. People's desires were being fulfilled. If he says may you have children they will have children. May you be wealthy they become wealthy. Naturally that power is what is respected in this world and power is very often identified with spirituality or self-realization. It could be just the opposite. Sri Ramakrishna used to say quoting Sri Krishna even if a devotee has one of the eight powers then he will never reach. That one itself is enough to bind. Siddhis what is the problem? Why can't a person have a tremendous power? The problem is not with the power. The problem is with how it affects our egotism. Anyway let me read out a little bit. Saint Simeon for more than 30 years he stayed on a 50 feet tall pillar. In order to get away from the ever increasing number of people who frequently came to him for prayers and advice leaving him little if any time for his livelihood among us the ruins formed a small platform at the top and upon this determined to live out his life. It has been stated that as he seemed to be unable to avoid escaping the world horizontally he and his elders living in the desert heard about Simeon who had chosen a new and strange form of asceticism they wanted to test him to determine whether his feats were founded in humility or pride. They decided to tell Simeon under obedience on his pillar. When they commanded Saint Simeon displayed complete obedience and humility and the monks told him to stay where he was. This is a most beautiful incident. The question is whether the elder person was worthy to command Simeon to obey him. The question is whether Simeon was worthy to command Simeon to obey him. The question is whether Simeon was worthy to command Simeon to obey him. The most wonderful things that come to my mind is you know the direct disciples of Sri Ram Krishna how great they were, how wonderful they were, but even then they were not worthy to command Simeon to obey him. The question is whether Simeon was worthy to command Simeon to obey him. The question is whether Simeon was worthy to command Simeon to obey him. If you must be conceited and egotistic, then feel conceited and egotistic, thinking that you are the servant of God, the child of God. Direct these expressions to God. For instance, my Rama, my Krishna, if you must have pride, then feel like Vibhishana who said I have touched the feet of Rama with my head. I will not touch the feet of Rama with my head. I will not touch the feet of Rama with my head. I will not touch the feet of Rama with my head. I will not touch the feet of Rama with my head. I will not touch the feet of Rama with my head.
